The phenomenon of the Reformation

In 2017, we celebrated the 500th anniversary of the beginning of a tremendous spiritual movement, which has changed the course of history forever – the Reformation. German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel called the Reformation "a sense of the history of modern times."
The social phenomena, born by the Reformation, is one of the greatest achievements in the history of mankind. Ukrainians also strive towards this phenomena. Western civilization in many ways derives its sources from the spiritual ideals of the Reformation.
The Reformation is the return of individuals, the Church, and society to biblical standards. It is a return to the person of Jesus Christ – the Son of God, the everlasting Word that became flesh. This is the essence, meaning, and power of the Reformation.

GOALS

OF THE PROGRAM “REFORMATION 500”

Promote the evangelical theological,
ideological and historical identity of
Ukrainian Protestants.

Most Ukrainian Evangelicals have not fully formed their biblical worldview.
The concept of the world is often influenced by a syncretistic mixture of Eastern orthodoxy, communism, and postmodernism. Unfortunately, the socio-historical identity of Evangelical Christians in Ukraine is not deep. Many young educated Protestants, especially in this post Maidan period (after the Revolution of Dignity), are looking towards Catholicism or Secularism. Every believer individually and collectively as the church should form their evangelical worldview of reality and their place in it.
The anniversary of the Reformation was a great opportunity for the return to the biblical basis of our belief and to be more deeply rooted in the evangelical worldview, history, and cultural identity of Ukrainian Protestants.

Bring the Good News to the Ukrainians, especially Ukrainian intellectuals, about the salvation in Christ using the historical apologetics.

The Reformation began with a return to the pure faith in Jesus Christ – the only Savior and Lord. Reformation theology focuses on Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture. True Reformation always begins with having personal faith in Jesus Christ and it always leads to Him. We do not need to adapt the Gospel according to the current trends; truth is not challenged by evolving circumstances – but it is consistent for different historical times, cultures, and social classes. But we need to learn to speak many different ‘languages’ to communicate with various social groups and be correctly understood. Above all, the target audience was aimed at the Ukrainian intellectuals who need rational arguments and persuasive evangelism. The celebration of the Reformation anniversary was a great opportunity for this type of evangelism!

Raise the image of the Evangelical Church by spreading the cultural and civilizational achievements of the Reformation (with particular emphasis on the positive result in Eastern Europe).

In post-communist Ukraine the Evangelical Church continues to bear a label of a sect. This sectarian stigmatization hinders the spreading of the Gospel among Ukrainians. Meanwhile, it is the Protestants who made a great contribution to the formation of Western civilization. Protestants are recognized by the most leading countries, whose achievements Ukraine is trying to imitate today. It is not a new phenomenon in Ukrainian culture. Evangelical faith here has its roots in the early 15th century to the Hussites. In the 16th and 17th centuries many prominent Ukrainian leaders acknowledged evangelical faith. Demonstration of the biblical nature of Protestantism, its scale and impact on the development of civilization will become a strong apologetic tool that is able to overcome many false myths about Protestants.

Provide guidance for reforms in public life, based on the biblical worldview through the example of the Protestant Reformation.

Today Ukraine is going through a crucial historical moment. Maidan, military shock, and the permanent economic crisis have formed a significant public demand for change. The Ukrainians expect economic reforms, political reformatting, etc. But no reform will have positive effects without the changes in the worldview, morals, and the mentality of Ukrainians. The things our nation lacks so much: the value of personality, work ethic, the rule of law, the development of national culture, civil society and parliamentary democracy – all these can be found in spirituality and traditions of the Reformation.

Affect the Non-Protestant denominations to become more biblical and Christ-centered.

Starting from the 16th century, the Reformation contributed to the emergence of progressive tendencies in Catholicism and Orthodoxy – to return to biblical standards in theology and church life. This spiritual impulse was so significant in Ukraine (especially through the activities of brotherhoods in the 16th century.) that it outlined out a clear distinction between Ukrainian and Russian Orthodoxy. Catholicism has been being radically transformed through the influence of Protestantism since the Council of Trent until this day. It was especially noticeable in the second half of the 20th century, after the Second Vatican Council. Restoring the ideas of Reformation in 2017 in a broadly Christian context can give a new opportunity, not only to Protestants, to return (at least in some aspects) to biblical standards of faith and church life.

One message

A key element of the success of the Year of Reformation program in Ukraine
was a unified message that interpreted and actualized historical events and ideas.
Three characteristics of this message should be noted here:
01
The universality
of the term
'the Reformation'

- The universality of the term ‘the Reformation’ and the classical theological paradigm, the non-attachment of the message to a particular denominational tradition or historical era of the Reformation (16th and the first half of the 17th century). The Reformation is rather perceived as God's eternal idea: Ecclesia semper reformanda secundum Verbum Dei (Latin for „The church must always be reformed”). The idea is to bring every person, church, and society back to the biblical standard.

02
Christ-centeredness

- Christ-centeredness. Although the rhetoric of the message was not religious and maintained a popular academic style, it remained Christocentric and Bibliocentric. Everything is based around ‘Solus Christus’ and ‘Sola Scriptura’. Such a basic phenomenon of Western culture, as the "value of individual", has its source in the love of God, who did not spare his Son for every person, regardless of their social status. In this interpretation, the message was evangelistic.

03
Relevance

- Relevance to the current conditions and needs of Ukraine. Our country is experiencing a turning point in its history. In 2014, for the first time since 1654, it has turned away from Russia and the Soviet communist heritage and intensified its integration processes with European civilization. However, in the second decade of the XXI century, it becomes unclear what these European values are and what Western civilization is built on. Celebrating the Reformation, we see it as the spiritual and ideological source that has shaped the West over the last five centuries, as the main reason for its success. It is the seed of the Reformation that has born the fruits that Ukrainians aspire to today: civil society, effective democracy, economic prosperity, the rule of law, freedom, and the value of the individual.

One brand

A unique element of the program is a unified and professional brand book for printed materials, media resources, as well as all events and projects implemented by Christians throughout the program. This fact has helped to identify evangelical Christians, their beliefs and values as something one and whole.

R500 portfolio

Structure

One of the successes was the development of one national and many regional organizing committees
consisting of representatives of various evangelical denominations. Committees also had internal
structures. The structure of R500 included 7 departments:

  • Scientific and historical
    department
  • Creative department
  • Resource department
  • Media department
  • Youth department
  • Social department
  • Legal department
Each department implemented the program according to the calendar plan.

Politicians

Due to the participation of important Ukrainian Protestant politicians, the program received huge state support, which in Ukrainian circumstances proved to be extremely crucial. A team of Christians from the EER Ministry initiated the celebration of 450 years of the Reformation in Belarus (1553-2003). Several dozens of different projects were carried out, such as academic, educational, publishing and of an evangelistic nature. The Belarusian Reformation Anniversary brought together all top-level evangelical denominations and spread information about the Reformation in Belarus, as an important part of the national heritage. The project has received strong support from the Belarusian secular intelligentsia. The Ukrainian version, although it was of a much larger scale, widely used the Belarusian experience.

Naming them here would be extremely difficult, so we will not attempt to mention all of them. Nevertheless we know that without all of their contribution, it would be impossible to imagine the scale and variety of projects that took place.
